Thank you for your time. We, over here at Redding Township will get back to you as soon as possible.

It’s a Board Meeting, folks.

Under the Open Meetings Act (OMA), the only place a Township Board can do its business is in a public meeting of the Township Board. Board meetings are the business meetings of the Board, and is in the best interest of the Township as a whole that the board conducts its business in an organized, productive and business-like manner.

The public, however, can (and is invited to) interact with the Township at any time: by going to the Township Offices, phoning or emailing a Board member, or visiting the Township’s website — even buttonholing a Board member at the grocery store.

To clarify, the monthly Township Board Meeting is not a “town hall meeting”, where everyone has a say in decisions. And, they are not meant to be extended complaint sessions or arguments. This is something that many people, including Board members themselves, can lose sight of. Especially in the recent years, when national politicians and the media regularly use the term “town hall meeting” as a reference to a public forum. But, that does not represent the form of the format of local government entities in Michigan.

The Board meetings are not monthly platforms for debate, not equal time situations for the public or individual Board members. The public does not have a vote in the Board’s decisions. The legal entitlement to express opinions at a Board meeting is during the allotted Public Comment period(s), or at a dedicated Public Hearing that would be scheduled for a specific issue.

The idea that all concerns, opinions, etc. must be allowed and expressed at a Board meeting is neither mandated by law not recommended from a practical standpoint. By their nature, Board meetings can put either ‘side’ on the defensive, in a very public place.

Often, the comments or questions raised by meeting attendees are not specific Township business that can be reasonably transacted by the Board. In reality, many issues that the public bring to a Board meeting are handled better — in the interest of the public — by the appropriate Township official, and during normal business hours.

Todd Jeffery, Supervisor.

Brooke Daniels, Clerk.

Kelly Nurenberg, Treasurer.

Billy Lemaster, Trustee.

Bonnie Pierce, Trustee.

Feel free to visit during normal business hours, or schedule an appointment.

We, Redding Township, would be most delighted to hear from the community. You, the public have a right to attend the regularly scheduled meetings each month, so your voice can be heard.
